Billy (Bill) Gene Kelley, 87, of Clear Spring, MD, passed away Friday, January 5, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 12, 1930, in Big Spring, MD, he was the son of the late Charles William Kelley and Laura Royalston (Shank) Kelley.
Bill was a graduate of Clear Spring High School class of 1948. He then worked at Fairchild Aircraft Industries. In 1949, he enlisted in the Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Princeton during the Korean War from 1949-1953. Upon discharge from the Navy, he went to work for Earl Millers Garage as a mechanic.
Bill and Mary Alice Hawbaker were married in 1958 at St. John’s U.C.C. in Clear Spring, MD.
In 1961, Bill was hired by the Board of Education as a shop foreman in the Transportation Dept. He retired in 1988 after 27 years of service.
Bill was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Clear Spring, the Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222 and the BPOE Elks Lodge 378 of Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Alice (Hawbaker) Kelley, of Clear Spring; a daughter, Lori Kelley; a son, Bradley S. Kelley and wife, MaDonna; grandchildren, Brooke Gomulka, Alexandra Gomulka, and Christopher Bognar, sister in law; Anna Jane Kelley, brothers-in-law and a sisters-in-law; Dr. Eldon L. and Mary Jane Hawbaker, Glenn and Kathleen King, Rodney and Betty Shank, Carl and Marianne Hawbaker, nieces; Carolyn Powell, Joyce Whittington, Krista Knight, Lisa Shank Poole, Kim Dryden, Heather Braun, Beth Mitropoulos, Jamie Weinberg, nephews; Todd King, Rick and Rhett Funston and Andrew Hawbaker.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Ray Kelley.
Hobbies included woodworking and mechanical work. He loved the outdoors- fishing, camping and hunting with his son Brad, in Maryland, WestVirginia and out west. Vacations to the Outer Banks of North Carolina with family and friends was most enjoyable to him. He spent many, many happy times with his grandchildren, Brooke, Alex and Chris.
Services will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at 11:00 am at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, MD. The Rev. Charles Mackley will officiate. Interment will follow at Little Rose Hill Cemetery, Clear Spring, MD with military honors by the Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 pm. For the convenience of friends, you may visit the funeral home after noon.
