Born December 19, 1939, in Big Cove Tannery, PA, he was the son of the late Reed Walker Johnson Sr. and Virginia Pleasant (Gordon) Johnson.
David was a veteran of the US Army. He was a member of the United Auto Workers and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
David worked for Mack Truck in Hagerstown for over 40 years before retiring at age 69.
He met the love of his life, JoAnn, and married her at 21 years old on December 23, 1960. They were married for 60 years.
David loved slow and fast pitch softball, and sports of all kinds. Soccer was especially one of his favorites. When he wasn’t watching sports, he enjoyed being with his wife, and getting visits from his kids and grandkids.
David is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn Johnson; 4 children and their spouses, Jeffrey Johnson, Debra Umbrell and husband, Ron, Daryl Johnson and wife, Annette, Kelly Herrington and husband, Chris; 9 grandchildren, Raelyn, Myra, Austin, Ashley, Connor, Ethan, Benjamin, Parker, and Hunter; 2 great-grandsons, David and Johnnie; and two sisters, Phyllis Pittman and Karen Zimmerman.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by two brothers, Reed Johnson Jr. and James Johnson; two sisters, Leona Divelbliss and Peggy Bain.
Services will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2020, at 12 pm at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, MD. The Rev. Lauren L. Yost Sr. will officiate. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, MD.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday prior to the service from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm.
