Born April 28, 1933, in Big Spring, MD, she was the daughter of the late Paul C. Reid and Mary (Hart) Reid.
Polly was a 1951 graduate of Clear Spring High School and was the salutatorian for her class. After graduation, she attended nursing school in Hagerstown for 2 years prior to marrying and starting her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Miles, Sr., to whom she was married for 34 years.
Polly was a long-time member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Clear Spring, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild.
She was a true matriarch in every sense of the word. She was a mother and homemaker first of all. Polly was employed by the Coach House as the first and only employee. She was also employed at the Valley Market as a deli worker, and then at Marriott Foods (Downsville Pike) as a kitchen/cafeteria worker, from where she retired.
Polly is survived by her daughter, Sharon Harrison of Hagerstown; son, John A. Miles, Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Clear Spring; daughter, Lola Keefer and husband, Larry, of Mercersburg, PA; daughter Mary Eshleman and husband, Kevin, of Mercersburg, PA; and son, Dean Miles and wife, Laura, of Clear Spring.
She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Cheryl Harriso Mills and husband, Matt, Sabrina LeHew and husband, Scott, Kristie Barnhart and husband, Bob, Johnny Miles and wife, Sara, Katie Hoover and husband, Jason, Donovan Keefer and fiance, Theresa, Shawn Keefer and wife, Jenni, Dana McAllister and husband, Chad, Terri Mumma and husband, Gene, Bobbie Jo Barnhart and husband, Scott, Amy Eshleman, Jaime Eshleman, Jessica Miles and partner, Andy, and Brooke Miles and partner, Keith.
Those grandchildren blessed her with 34 great-grandchildren, Olivia and Garrett Lee, Sam and Grace LeHew, Ryne Mills, Atlee, Sawyer, Finn, and Emery Barnhart, Savannah, Bryant, and Ellie Miles, Kendal, Kara, and Jake Hoover, Baylee and Chloee Keefer, Skylar and Hannah McAllister, Julie Miller, Jennifer Koontz, Evan Beckley, Brandon and Kaylee Barnhart, Casey Murray, Alexis Snook, Gage Westurn, Piper and Wyatt Reed, Kolton and Emma Hovis, and Charlotte, Kipp, and Willow Cooper.
On top of that, she was blessed with 8 great-great-grandchildren, Addison Beckley, Braydon and Emily Ocasio,Cambrie Baker, Cayson, Easton, and Kathleen Koontz, and Macie Murray.
Also surviving her are her brother, Maurice Reid and wife, Gerry, of Hagerstown; two sisters, Roselyn Welch and husband, Leon, of Hagerstown, and Faye Hose of Williamsport; 2 sisters in law, Elaine Reid and Sue Reid; and many many many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Paul E. Reid, Donald L. Reid, Earl B. Reid, and Roy A. Reid; a sister, Lolita M. Divelbiss; 2 brothers in law, Raymond Divelbiss Sr. and Charles “Pig” Hose, Sr.; and a son in law, Hubert “JR” Harrison.
The family will receive friends at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, MD on Thursday, January 28, 2021 from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of friends, you may visit the funeral home after noon.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
