Born April 7, 1944, in Bell Grove, MD, he was the son of the late George “Scope” Wilbur Swain and Nancy Mildred (Booth) Swain.
Gary was a 1962 graduate of Flintstone High School and attended Catherman’s Business College.
He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Vietnam War.
Gary retired from Mack Truck in Hagerstown and was an active member of Evangel Baptist Church in Hagerstown, where he served on the deacon board and worked with Awanas.
He was a member of the local UAW, the Hancock American Legion Post 26, NRA, and the Street Rod Association. In early years, Gary enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid fan of cars, especially GTOs, and loved attending car and motorcycle shows.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Bernice A. (Pryor) Swain of Clear Spring; a son, Jeff Swain (Terri Albritton) of Clear Spring; a brother, Steve Swain (Sharon); 3 brother in laws, Butch Pryor (Nancy), Roger Pryor (Glenda) and Bruce Pryor; a granddaughter, Hayden Swain; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends who loved him.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by a sister, Novella and a brother, Adolph.
Services will be held on Friday, September 4, 2020, at 11 am at Evangel Baptist Church, 17926 Broadfording Road, Hagerstown, MD. The Rev. Ron Faith will officiate. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, MD.
The family will receive friends at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, MD on Thursday evening from 5 to 7 pm. For the convenience of friends, you may visit the funeral home after noon.
Due to current COVID-19 regulations, facial coverings are required and social distancing will be practiced.
