Janice Marie (Shank) Gearhart, 74, of Clear Spring, MD, passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.
Born October 14, 1944, in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late John Amos Shank and Leona Louise (Churchey) Shank.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Douglas Raymond Gearhart, in 2015.
Janice was a 1962 graduate of Clear Spring High School, a graduate of Frostburg University, and Shippensburg University, where she received her Master’s Degree.
She was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Clear Spring, where she served on the council and various committees.
Janice retired from the Washington County Board of Education where she was a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and lastly, the director of Human Resources for the Board of Education.
She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Washington County, the Retired Administrators Association of Washington County, the Alpha Delta Kappa, MD Sigma Chapter, the Loyal Order of Eastern Star, and the Clear Spring District Historical Society.
Janice cherished her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She dedicated her life to the Lord and read her daily devotions in her den at sunrise. Janice was an avid gardener and loved her flower gardens.
She is survived by her daughter, Julie Schultz and husband, Shawn, of Clear Spring; her son, Craig Gearhart and wife, Abby, of Walkersville, MD; grandchildren, Collin, Spencer, Wyatt, and Eva; and a special friend, Deb Alsip, of Clear Spring.
Services will be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at 11:00 am at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, MD. The Rev. Richard Shives will officiate. Interment will follow at Shanktown Cemetery, Big Pool, MD.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 to 8 pm. For the convenience of friends, you may visit the funeral home after noon.
