Born June 25, 1921, in Big Spring, MD, she was the daughter of the late Frederick Louis Charles and Mary Caroline (McKinsey) Charles.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Franklin Swope, in 1996.
Jean was a 1939 graduate of Clear Spring High School. She graduated and received her license from a cosmetology school in Martinsburg, WV.
She co-owned Fountaindale Beauty Salon for many years. After retiring from the salon, she continued to work from her home until the age of 80.
Jean was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she was a member of the Hagerstown Ward and a former Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Jean loved children, found happiness in serving others, and was a well respected lady within her community. In her spare time, she enjoyed geneaology research and arts and crafts.
Jean is survived by two sons, Jerry Swope and wife, Janie, of Hagerstown, and John Swope and wife, Mary, of Clear Spring; two daughters, Judith Hotsko of Clear Spring and Joanne Swope and husband, Rick Shoup of Chambersburg, PA; five grandchildren, Jason Swope, Jefferson Swope, Matthew Swope and special friend, Brenda, James Hann, and Heather Proctor; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Ludwig; 3 brothers, Joseph Charles, Bernhard Charles, and Norris Charles; a son in law, George Hotsko; and a granddaughter, Sherri Unger.
There will be no viewing or visitation. However, a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
