Born in 1932, in Charlton, MD, he was the oldest son of the late Missouri Boyd and Samuel Boyd.
Merritt was raised by his grandmother and grandpap Shank, who had a blacksmith shop. He enjoyed working in that shop all of his life. Some of Merritt’s nephews and friends could tell many stories about how they needed a part to fix something that was now obsolete. Merritt would gladly take on the task, in his glory, working hour after hour until he created it for them.
He was a 1951 graduate of Clear Spring High School and a member of the NRA, the Western Maryland Sportsman Club, and the local UAW 171.
Merritt worked at Mack Truck until his retirement and then took on a hobby of fixing lawnmowers.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Betty Jane (Shank) Boyd; a daughter, Donna Luhouse and husband, Steve; a son, Merritt Shank Boyd Jr. and wife, Barbara; a granddaughter, Laura Stotler and husband, Tommy III; a grandson, Gregory Steven Luhouse II and Rachael; a great-granddaughter, Natalie Stotler; two great-grandsons, Lucas Luhouse and Benjamin Luhouse; two Brothers, Andre Boyd, and Dolan Boyd and wife, Francis; and a sister, Dian Banzhoff and husband, Bud.
