Born December 6, 1950, in Berkeley Springs, WV, he was the son of the late Leslie Alfred Schetrompf Sr. and Mary Virginia (Hensley) Cordero.
He was a 1968 graduate of South Hagerstown High School and was of the Christian faith.
Ray was a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Vietnam War.
He retired from the Maryland Correctional Institute in Hagerstown. Ray was previously employed at Grove Manufacturing, Bragunier Masonry, Pangborn Corporation, and Jessup Correctional Institutes.
He was a lifetime member of the Mercersburg Sportsman’s Association, where he served on the Board of Directors, a lifetime member of the Waynesboro Fish and Game Club, a member of the Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222 of Clear Spring, the Mercersburg Moose, Delaware Sons of the Confederate Veterans Delaware Grays Camp #2068, a member of the Sugarloaf Mountain Coonhunters Association, where he served as President, a member of the Cumberland Valley Racing Pigeons, and a member of the Hagerstown Racing Pigeon Club.
Ray loved going to auctions and flowers. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and coonhunter. Ray enjoyed all of the time he spent with his family and friends.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Beverly (Swope) Hensley, of Williamsport; two daughters, Carol Zoch and husband, John, of Seaford, DE and Wanda Hensley of Williamsport; sisters, Barb Skeweris, Kathy Martin, Martha Johnson, Esther Bellos, Louise McDowell, Cathy Compton, Cindy LaFollette, Brenda Hall, and Sherry Sheets; brothers, Mark Mayle, Bill Mayle, and Steven Schetrom; grandchildren, Kayla Hensley, Leavitt Horst Jr., Brianna Horst, Cody Plutschak, and Destiny Zoch; great-grandchildren, Spencer Hensley and Reagan Kriner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Bergman, Annabelle Keefer, Ruth Myers, and Debbie Stines; brothers, John Schetrompf, Leslie Schetrompf Jr., Paul Schetrompf, and David Schetrompf; and canine companions, Blue, Buddy, and Hunter.
Services will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at 11 am at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, MD. Family friend Cletus Henson will officiate. Interment will follow at Little Rose Hill Cemetery, Clear Spring, MD with military honors.
The family will receive friends at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., Clear Spring, MD on Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 pm. For the convenience of friends, you may visit the funeral home after noon.
